Meet Andrew Goodwin from Opera Meets Organ

Last year’s Opera Meets Organ with Jessica Dean was an audience favourite.

Whilst we look forward immensely to Jessica returning for Opera Meets Organ this March, she is joined by tenor Andrew Goodwin – who has a surprising connection to cathedral music.

A fine Australian tenor, with a sensitive, expressive and beautiful voice, Andrew studied singing in St Petersburg. His career as an operatic tenor has seen him embrace a wide range of roles at the world’s greatest opera houses, including La Scala Milan, Gran Theatre Liceu Barcelona, Teatro Real Madrid and of course the Sydney Opera House.

However, Andrew began his musical life as a cathedral chorister. Andrew says:

“I grew up with the wonderful experience of cathedral choral music at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Sydney, and have come to acknowledge how important such an experience has been for me throughout my singing career. I was also the cathedral organ scholar. A magnificent instrument, I studied at the Sydney con before leaving for Russia to study singing.

“I still deeply love the unique musical tradition of a cathedral choir – indeed I am so happy my son is singing in my old cathedral choir – and it is wonderful to know that there is such support for this music at St Peter’s Cathedral in Adelaide. I look forward very much to hearing and singing with your wonderful cathedral organ, about which I have heard so much!”

We are looking forward enormously to Saturday March 4th, to hear Andrew sing with Jessica Dean and Anthony Hunt, on our pipe organ of which the Cathedral is rightly so proud. Make sure you get your tickets here – and if this is your second (or third!) time at an Opera Meets Organ concert, make sure you bring some friends to share!

We are very lucky that Andrew will be returning at the end of the year to sing in our Christmas performances of Handel’s Messiah. Andrew sings probably the finest Messiah in Australia today – for a taste, enjoy this video of him singing “Comfort ye” with the Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House.
