Outreach and Travel

While the core responsibility for the St Peter’s Cathedral Choir is to sing regular and special services in the Cathedral, the Choir is invited to sing services in other churches and schools. This is an opportunity to provide music to people who would not otherwise have an opportunity to hear this repertoire of music.

The Choir has toured within Australia to Melbourne, the Mid-North and Clare Valley and Kangaroo Island. In 2006-07, the Choir embarked on its first international tour, to England, singing in cathedrals at Oxford, St Albans, Lincoln, Hereford, York, Ripon and Wakefield, Sherborne Abbey, and St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. In 2010-11 the Choir undertook its second international tour, to Southern England and Rome. In England the Choir sang services in Ely, Peterborough, Salisbury, Wells, Winchester, Canterbury, Guilford, Chichester and a concert for Amnesty International in Aylesbury. When in Rome the Choir sang in the Basilicas of Santa Maria Maggiore and St Paul’s Outside the Walls, with the Tour culminating in singing Mass in St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The Choir recently returned from its 2014-15 third international tour, to Scotland, England and France. Highlights included St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh, York Minster and Westminster Abbey in England and Notre Dame in Paris.

Touring offers the Choristers an opportunity to understand their musical heritage and to sing in some of the most important Cathedrals and churches. In addition it offers the unique opportunity for the Choristers to sing together every day. This is all the more significant in the absence of a dedicated Choir School. On each occasion the Choir has returned to Adelaide renewed in its enthusiasm and singing better than ever.
