St Peter’s Cathedral Choir was established in 1876 and continues to provide high quality music and musical education to this day. The Choir is central to the musical life of St Peter’s Cathedral, but also contributes to the Anglican Diocese of Adelaide and the wider Adelaide and South Australian community. The Choir has been under the directorship of Leonie Hempton OAM, Director of Music, since 1996, with Shirley Gale as Principal Organist until late 2014. Joshua van Konkelenberg was appointed Cathedral Organist in March 2015.

St Peter’s Cathedral Music Foundation, established in the early 1990s, is a non-profit body dedicated to providing and promoting music for the Cathedral and beyond. It is committed to enhancing the Cathedral’s role as a centre for spirituality, music and arts in Adelaide. It supports the development of world class music from talented and dedicated musicians, including choristers, organists and composers. The Cathedral music program spans the centuries from Gregorian plainchant to the 21st century, including commissioned works by Australian composers. The Music Foundation has supported Choral and Organ Scholars, upgrading of the Cathedral Music Library, and services and concerts presented by Cathedral and external musicians. The Foundation has recently passed its initial target of $1m in capital funds.
